Neuschwanstein has two ticket doors and both close early: the online shop, which sells out days ahead in season, and the Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau, which opens at 8am with a same-day remainder that — in the basilica-of-Bavaria’s own words — is “most days sold out in the late morning hours”. Here is what still works when both are gone.
The operator that says it plainest is the guided tour with skip-the-line tickets: “pre-reserved castle tickets, even on sold-out days” — 4.7 from 908 guests, from about $69.
How the tickets work
- Every ticket is a timed guided tour inside the castle (about 35 people per tour, ~30 minutes, ~350 steps with a lift available). No ticket, no interior — you can walk up and see the outside and the Marienbrücke without one.
- Online: hohenschwangau.de, €21 adult + €2.50 online fee (under-18s free, plus the fee), subject to availability.
- Same day: the Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau village opens at 8am, first come first served, no reservations by phone or email, no waiting list. Sold out late morning on most days.
The playbook
- Book the interior the moment your dates are fixed. In summer that means weeks ahead.
- If online is gone, check the tours that carry their own allotment — the operators reserve castle tickets in bulk and say so:

- Read whether entry is included or optional. The most-booked coach tours make the castle ticket an add-on; on a sold-out day, “optional” can mean unavailable. The cost guide walks through each.
- Be at the Ticket Center before 8am if you are gambling on the same-day remainder — and have a plan B (the outside, the bridge, Hohenschwangau castle, which is easier to get into).
What not to do
- Do not buy “guaranteed entry” from a nameless reseller at silly prices — a named operator with hundreds of reviews and “pre-reserved” in its own includes is the legitimate version.
- Do not assume a coach tour includes the interior — most do not, by default.
- Do not arrive after 8am hoping.
