Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge): the Photograph, and How to Get to It
The postcard view of Neuschwanstein is from the Marienbrücke over the Pöllat gorge — 5 minutes from the shuttle-bus stop, longer on foot. It closes in bad weather and ice, which catches winter visitors out. How to reach it, when it is open, and the tours that include it.
Every photograph you have seen of Neuschwanstein was taken from one place: the Marienbrücke, a footbridge slung across the Pöllat gorge above and behind the castle. It is the best fifteen minutes of the visit — and it is the part most likely to be closed when you come. Here is how to get there and when it is open.
The local guided tour that builds it in is the skip-the-line guided tour from Hohenschwangau, which includes the shuttle ride to the bridge “when operating and the bridge is open”.
What it is
A narrow iron bridge (rebuilt in the 19th century over an older wooden one, named for Ludwig II’s mother, Queen Marie) spanning the gorge at the level of the castle’s upper floors. From the middle you look straight along the castle’s south face with the Alpine foothills behind — the picture. It is not part of the castle tour; no ticket is needed.
How to get there
- Shuttle bus from the village (€3.50 one way / €5 return): the bus stops at the viewpoint above the castle; the bridge is a 5-minute walk from the stop, and the castle gate a 15-minute walk downhill from there. Photos first, castle second — the natural order.
- On foot from the castle: the path continues up behind the castle to the bridge — steep, another 10–15 minutes.
- On foot from the village: 30–40 minutes to the castle, then up.
When it closes
The bridge closes in bad weather and in ice and snow, and the shuttle bus stops running in the same conditions — which is why winter visitors so often miss it. Even in summer, heavy rain can shut it for the day. No operator can guarantee it: read the wording on any tour that mentions the bridge — the honest ones say “when operating and the bridge is open”. If the bridge is closed, the best substitute view is the walk up the path from the village and the exterior courtyards.
The queue
On summer middays the bridge is a shuffle: hundreds of people on a footbridge built for a queen and her guests. Go early (first shuttle) or late afternoon after the coaches have left; the light is best in the morning on the castle’s south face and in the late afternoon for the valley behind.
