Getting Up to Neuschwanstein Castle: Walk, Shuttle or Carriage

The castle is not in the village. From the car parks and the Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau it is a real climb, and your ticket time is a hard deadline — miss it and it is gone. Here is every way up, with the 2026 prices, and how to time it.

Parking: the Hohenschwangau car parks (P1–P4) cost about €12 for up to 6 hours (€1 per extra hour, capped). Arrive early in summer — the lots fill.
The timing that matters
Your castle ticket names a tour time. Plan backwards from it:
- Walking: leave the village at least 45 minutes before your tour.
- Shuttle: allow 30 minutes including the wait, and remember it drops you at the bridge, above the castle — 15 minutes down to the gate.
- Carriage: allow 30 minutes including the queue and the last walk up.

- Photos first: shuttle up (bridge, then castle), walk down.
- Kids or tired legs: carriage up, walk down.
- Fit and early: walk both ways — the path is pretty and free.
- Winter: the shuttle stops when there is ice, and the Marienbrücke closes; walk, and don’t count on the bridge.
